Patna Zoo, also known as Sanjay Gandhi Jaivik Udyan, is a magnificent zoological park located in the heart of Patna, the capital of Bihar, India. Established in 1973 and spread across a sprawling area of 153 acres, Patna Zoo is a prominent landmark that showcases an excellent ex-situ conservation area of varied species of wild flora and fauna and serves as a haven for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts. Patna Zoo is considered the lungs of the city.
In the year 1969, a botanical garden was established for development purposes under the guidance of the then Honorable Governor Shri Nitya Nand Kanunga. A land area of 34.00 acres was transferred from the Raj Bhavan. In 1971-72, under the chairmanship of the Honorable Governor, a high-level meeting was held, where it was decided to develop the vacant land of the nearby Revenue Department and Public Works Department into a botanical garden.
