Patna-Zoo

Founding of Patna Zoo

Established in 1973, Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park, popularly known as Patna Zoo, began its journey as a botanical garden in 1969, under the guidance of Honorable Governor Shri Nityanand Kanungo. Originally covering 34 acres, the garden expanded to 153 acres with land contributions from the Revenue and Public Works Departments. Officially declared a Protected Forest in 1983, Patna Zoo gradually evolved into one of India’s premier zoological parks.

In 1980, it was renamed Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park by the then Chief Minister, Dr. Jagannath Mishra, during Wildlife Week celebrations. Over the decades, Patna Zoo became a center for wildlife conservation, breeding programs, and environmental education, attracting over 2.5 million visitors annually. Home to Royal Bengal Tigers, Asian Elephants, Rhinos, and rare species, Patna Zoo continues to balance conservation efforts with public awareness, ensuring the protection of India’s natural heritage for future generations.
